Installing VMware Player 5.0

Previous: libyaml / psych / rvm / zlib issues

Had to rebuild a laptop after a hard drive crash. When I installed VMware Player 5.0, I discovered the procedure was a bit less obvious than it has been in the past. Here it is.

First, I had to search the VMware site for the word "player" to locate information about VMware Player. I assume they have made it a little harder to find because it is a free product. You will easily find VMware Workstation, but you will have to search for VMware Player. Fortunately, it is still available.

The search turned up this knowledge base page with installation information: How to install VMware Player.

The download page is here: VMware Player download page.

The instructions state that you are downloading a .bundle file, but what you get is a .txt file. It turns out that the .txt file is the .bundle file, but named .txt. I assume this is to enable the file to pass through filename filters in corporate perimeter security. This is not explained in the documentation.

You have to make the .txt file executable with chmod +x filename. This is not explained in the documentation.

At that point you can execute the bundle with sudo filename. This is not explained in the documentation. The installer will step you through the remainder of the installation procedure.
